What I like about this picture are the subdued colors, and the gazing out of the frame. If I were to pull back from Alison’s face, however, you’d see a whole different kind of picture. Outside the frame would be a not-so-nice looking park, and a lot of distractions. A close crop helps to focus the viewer on the subject, and a wide aperture (1.4, 1.8, 2.8, etc.) help to blur the background, as can a long telephoto lens (150mm, 200mm, 300mm, etc.).
